Forbes Asia has reported that Chinese Telecoms company Huawei has organized an event at which hundreds of technical experts from China's larges companies received training to become developers on Huawei HarmonyOS Next. HarmonyOS was developed as an alternative to the Android operating system following trade sanctions from the US. Instead, Huawei has concentrated on developing its own rival operating system, HarmonyOS, which is now rapidly gaining ground in China.
The Forbes news said that the training in Beijing was attended by technical experts from many of China’s biggest state-owned and private companies, including the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), China Telecom, Meituan, and Baidu. HarmonyOS has been under development for the last four years following the introduction of the U.S. sanctions. By the end of 2022, HarmonyOS powered more than 330 million Huawei devices. Overall, Harmony has a 10 percent market share in China, compared to Apple iOS at 17 percent. Android still holds an 72 percent of the market. Alongside the smartphones, HarmonyOS is also used on Huawei's other devices, including tablets, smartwatches, and IoT products, bringing the total devices on which it is used in China up to over 700 million devices, with 2.2 million app developers creating apps for the platform. Early versions of HarmonyOS were based on Android Open Source Project code, but the latest versions are moving away from using this to run Huawei's own code and is even dropping support for Android apps. Huawei announced the latest version, HarmonyOS Next, at the Huawei Developers Conference 2023 (HDC) in August. This is described as supporting only native APP apps via the Ark Compiler with Huawei Mobile Services support. The change comes ahead of the HarmonyOS Next developer preview which is due to be launched in Q1 2024. The changes may explain the latest news on training developers. Other reports say major Chinese tech companies including NetEase, Meituan, TouTiao.com and DingTalk are hiring lots of new developers to ensure they can develop HarmonyOS Next applications. Positions advertised on the Zhilian Recruitment platform include software and mobile development and software testing for Internet apps and computer software.
