Gemini Code Assist Adds Free Layer
Monday, 10 March 2025

Google has announced the public preview of Gemini Code Assist for individuals, a free version of Google's AI-coding assistant together with Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, which provides free, AI-powered code reviews for both public and private repositories.

Gemini Code Assist already offers AI-powered assistance for development teams building and deploying applications. It can be used in IDEs such as VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, with support for most popular languages.

Code Assist suggests code completions as developers write code, will generate full functions or code blocks from comments, generate unit tests, and get help with debugging and documenting your code.

Last December Google added a number of tools to Code Assist, from companies including Atlassian (Rovo), GitHub, GitLab, Google Docs, Sentry, and Snyk. Atlassian Rovo combines collaboration and project management. It is based around
Rovo Search to combine data from Atlassian tools including Jira and Confluence. Sentry provides error monitoring and performance insights, while Snyk is a security tool that helps developers find and fix vulnerabilities in their code.

Gemini Code Assist for individuals is powered by Gemini 2.0, and supports all programming languages in the public domain. Google says it's been optimized for coding by fine-tuning the model by analyzing and validating a large number of real-world coding use cases.

The new free version can be used in Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDEs. Users of Firebase and Android Studio already had access to Gemini Code Assist for free.

One point to note is that unlike other free coding assistants such as GitHub CoPilot where developers are restricted to 2,000 code completions a month, Google is offering 180,000 code completions per month using Gemini Code Assist. As Google says, this is high enough so even dedicated professional developers would be hard-pressed to exceed it. Gemini Code Assist for individuals also has a generous token context window, with up to 128,000 input token support in chat. Google says this large context window lets developers use large files more easily and means Gemini Code Assist should have a broader understanding of their local codebases.

Alongside Code Assist, Google also announced a public preview of Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, which provides free, AI-powered code reviews for both public and private repositories.
