Amazon has partnered with edX to provide an intermediate level self-paced free course that  provides skills in building and deploying IoT solutions for commercial or consumer applications.

Structured to be a 4-week course requiring 2-5 hours per week, AWS IoT: Developing and Deploying an Internet of Things sets out to cover:

  • What the Internet of Things is and how it works
  • How to deploy IoT devices that are integrated with services such as AWS IoT Core,  AWS IoT Device Management, and AWS IoT Analytics
  • Use the AWS IoT APIs and SDKs.
  • How to collect, process and analyze data from IoT devices in the Cloud
  • How to use AWS IoT Greengrass to process and analyze data at the edge

It is intended for IT professionals and leaders with experience in both software development and the AWS Console who have an interest in connected home, industrial IoT, or commercial applications using IoT technology. By way of pre-requisites, it is recommended that learners have successfully completed the AWS Developer Professional Series on edX. This is a series of three 6-week courses which covers building, deploying and optimizing application of the AWS Cloud, working in Python on Linux and using a wide range of AWS tools.

Introducing the new IoT course, Lead Instructor  Allen Goldberg, Curriculum Development Manager  with Amazon Web Services explains that with the proliferation of devices in homes, factories, oil wells, hospitals, cars, and thousands of other places, we increasingly need solutions to connect them, and collect, store, and analyze device data. The solution he proposes is to use Amazon Web Services’ IoT services.

As the course progresses, AWS experts will explore topics such as the device gateway, device management, the device registry, and shadows. They will also discuss security features and implications, core and edge computing capabilities and benefits, and the use of HTTP and MQTT as communications protocols. Lastly, they will discuss the integration of IoT solutions with analytics tools, which will allow you to analyze the IoT data being collected by your fleet of devices.

This course consists of video-based lectures, demonstrations and hands-on lab exercises, run in your own AWS account, that will allow you to build, deploy and manage your own IoT solution.  The course can be audited for free, or learners can pay a $99 USD for a verified certificate.
