SIGGRAPH 2024 - Some Of What You Are Missing |

It's that SIGGRAPH time of year again and there is a really fun video showcasing some of the papers. For dedicated followers of graphics, you'll be pleased to know that the trailer still features a teapot and there are some rabbits! This year SIGGRAPH is in Denver from July 28 to August 1 and if you can't be there the videos that are usually produced are a reasonable view of what went on and if that isn't enough there is virtual access. As I commented about last year's SIGGRAPH, the spectre of generative AI is threatening the entire field of computer graphics which could just turn into a subcategory of AI. However, this said it seems that classical CG is still presenting us with innovations and improvements. Take a look at this year's preview of technical papers - tip it is worth slowing the presentation down to 0.75 speed just to be able to read the titles and see what is going on in detail: Disney has been doing a lot of work on giving small robots a character by the way they move and you can see some of the efforts late on in the video. While other struggle with getting robots to avoid falling over, Disney wants them to do silly walks! What I find surprising is that we still have model-based, and essentially simulation-based, graphics and while they are great to watch I can't help think what might be produced with the right inputs to a generative AI. About the only presentation that made use of AI is the style transfer of 2D images to 3D animated meshes. Yes, it's cool to see a van Gogh starry night in the form of waves, but I suspect that AI could have done the full job of providing something that looked like waves. In the examples where a neural network was used, I get the impression that traditional models are still in use for part of the task. My favourite? The blowup shapes might not be graphics, but it doesn't stop me wanting the software and the machine to cut the shapes needed to create blowup novelties. In the conference proper we still have a handful of keynotes from learned academics but this year notable by their presence are Jensen Huang, the boss of NVIDIA who has recently been making predictions about all sorts of future developments in AI and progamming in general, and Mark Zuckerberg, boss of something called Meta and we all know what metaverse bees he has in his bonnet. Finally I'm glad and relieved to see we still have the traditional rabbit and a teapot to contemplate. Perhaps times are not changing too fast.
