Since it was first introduced in early access in July 2023 JetBrains AI Assistant has become deeply integrated into JetBrains development environments, code editors, and other products. It was officially launched in December 2023 and has been the fastest-growing commercial tool ever in JetBrains' portfolio.  It is currently powered by both OpenAI’s and JetBrains’s models, and the company is working on integrating other LLMs to act as a neutral provider.

The result quoted come from a survey this month of 640 users from the US, Germany and other countries conducted to track how AI Assistant impacts developer productivity and experience.

The vast majority (84%) of respondents had the job role of Developer / Programmer/ Software Engineer;  59% had more than 10 years of coding experience and only 6% had less than 2 years.

JetBrains AI Assistant had been generally available for only 2 months at the time of the survey. Even so 56% of those surveyed had used it for more than a month, 30% for between 2 weeks and a month and 12% for between 1 and 2 weeks.

There's an interesting relation between length of usage and satisfaction with JetBrains AI Assistant in that the proportion of of satisfied users increases with length of usage:

Even among those  with shortest exposure, users who are satisfied or very satisfied outnumber those who are neutral, or dissatisfied by two to one.

When it comes to productivity there is a clear relationship between Coding experience and time saved using AI Assistant with those with less than 2 years of coding experience saving more time through using it.

Q. On average, how much time do you think you save per week by using JetBrains AI Assistant?

JBAITime

A combined total of 91% of respondents reported saving time by using the JetBrains AI Assistant. Across all respondents, 37% perceive a weekly time saving of between 1 to 3 hours, while another 22% of respondents report saving between 3 to 5 hours per week. However 35% of those with less than 2 years experience report saving between 3 to 5 hours per week and another 26% report saving between 1 to 3 hours. Among the most experienced developers, who are in the majority in this survey, while 37% report saving between 1 to 3 hours per week. only 19% report saving between 3 to 5 hours.

The survey result clearly show that a significant majority of users have experienced positive outcomes from using the AI Assistant. To look at this in more detail JetBrains used the Space Framework, which we first encountered in 2021, see What Ruins A Developer's Day.

Here are results of this exercise:
