DigitalOcean has launched a Managed Database service for PostgreSQL, with plans to add support for other database engines  throughout the year. The service provides fully hosted and managed database engines.

The service being offered by DigitalOcean adds to the options from other cloud providers who offer managed database services, such as Google's Cloud SQL, Microsoft's Azure Database, and Amazon's Managed Databases. While PostgreSQL is the first database to be supported by DigitalOcean, the company plans to add MySQL as the next managed database engine. After that, the company says it will listen to what its customers want in terms of other databases.

DigitalOcean is not a major player in comparison to companies such as Microsoft or Amazon, but it is growing from its origins as a provider of affordable virtual private servers offering just the basics. The company has added other services including object and block storage, containers and load balancers.

The Managed Database service is built on DigitalOcean's core compute platform and uses local SSD storage to ensure good performance. It provides users with free daily backups with point-in-time recovery, limited to the previous seven days. It also provides standby nodes with automated failovers. If a failure happens, Managed Databases will automatically switch data handling to a standby node to prevent against unplanned downtime.

As you'd expect, there's end-to-end security with all data encrypted both at rest and in transit with SSL. In addition, users can explicitly limit inbound connections based on their specific requirements.

Developers will be able to work either via a graphical user interface or the company’s API. There are also third-party Terraform providers.

The pricing announcement says you'll be able to spin up a database node starting from $15 per month or high availability cluster from $50 per month. Backups are included for free, ingress bandwidth is always free, and egress fees ($0.01/GB per month) will be waived for 2019.
