The Linux Foundation and Google have announced a partnership and launched an initiative in support of Chromium-based browsers. Supporters of Chromium-based Browsers is an initiative with the aim of fostering a sustainable environment of open-source contributions towards the health of the Chromium ecosystem and financially support a community of developers who want to contribute to the project. The Linux Foundation is a global nonprofit organization that works to enable innovation through open source software. The foundation says the latest initiative already has strong support from leading companies across technology, public sector, and industry vertical segments, and standardization organizations. The Supporters of Chromium-based Browsers fund will be managed by the Linux Foundation, and initial members of the initiative include Meta, Microsoft, and Opera. The website for the new initiative says it will provide a neutral space where industry leaders, academia, developers, and the broader open source community can work together to support projects within the Chromium ecosystem: "By fostering collaboration, the collective aims to remove barriers to innovation, expand adoption, and ensure that projects within the Chromium ecosystem receive the resources they need to thrive." The Chromium projects themselves will remain under current, existing governance structures while just the new Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers will be housed under the Linux Foundation. Announcing the initiative, the Linux Foundation says the new initiative prioritizes transparency, inclusivity, and community-driven development. A technical advisory committee (TAC) will be formed to guide the initiative's development, ensuring that it meets the needs of the wider Chromium community. Google says that while it welcomes the new initiative, at the same time: "we remain committed to being the responsible steward of the Chromium project and to the massive investment necessary to keep Chromium working well for the entire web industry."
