MySQL Cookbook, 3rd Ed

mysqlcook

Author: Paul DuBois
Publisher: O'Reilly
Pages: 836
ISBN: 9781449374020

This is another title by Paul DuBois, and we reviewed the third edition, awarding it five stars. The subtitle of the book is ‘Solutions for database developers and administrators’, and that sums up the content perfectly. This isn’t an intro for beginners as it assumes a basic level of knowledge about MySQL. Our overall impression of the book is that if you’re trying to work out how to do something specific in MySQL, the chances are DuBois will have a solution showing how to achieve your aim. It’s a very good addition to any MySQL bookshelf.

MariaDB Crash Course

Author: Ben Forta
Publisher: Addison-Wesley
Pages: 286
ISBN: 978-0321799944

As an open source offshoot of MySQL, MariaDB may well tempt database novices. MariaDB Crash Course is based on Ben Forta’s Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, but is obviously designed for use with MariaDB. ariaDB Crash Course is designed to take someone who’s new with databases from the absolute beginning of connecting to a MariaDB database all the way through ‘basic’ SQL, ending the main coverage with triggers, stored procedures and transactions.

Overall, we thought the book was well written and well placed for its target audience, and awarded it 4.6 stars.

PostgresSQL 14 Administration Cookbook

Author: Simon Riggs and Gianno Ciolli
Publisher: Packt Publishing
Pages: 608
ISBN: 978-1803248974

While this book describes itself as a cookbook, the recipes in it work through the necessary skills and knowledge to administer PostgresSQL 14. We gave it 4.5 stars.

This is a useful book, and the cookbook format works better than I'd imagined as a way of learning about PostgresSQL. There are some useful recipes, and the authors explain the topics clearly. Recommended.
