SharePoint and Big Data

SharePoint agenda

While the release of SQL Server 2012 offers lots of material for the database strand of the conference, SharePoint still gets its share of the glory. The main keynote looks at how SharePoint can be used alongside Big Data in cloud-based applications. Microsoft Director Steve Fox will look at just what Big Data is and how it can be mapped and reduced to provide information that can then be analysed and acted on. Big Data is a natural fit with cloud-based computing, and Fox will also discuss how SharePoint and SharePoint Online fits with this. Steve is also giving a SharePoint session on “Developing Cloud-Based SharePoint applications using Windows Azure”, showing how you can create cloud-based applications for SharePoint.

While cloud-based systems may be the future, a more earth-bound session looks at how to code SharePoint Lists. Wouter van Vugt shows how you can use Visual Studio to provide new views and business driven forms for your SharePoint users without the need to add-in intermediate technologies such as InfoPath or other forms designers. Wouter says that pure C&C (Code and CAML, the breakfast of champs) are the key to providing the most tuned integration into your user’s world, and that if you attend the session you’ll learn how to enhance views to a degree you didn’t think possible using the example of a Bing maps integrated list view Web Part, complete with Fluent Ribbon support. All in all, SharePoint Lists will never be a boring topic for you again - or so Wouter promises!

Wouter is also the man behind a session entitled “Making Your Solutions Pop with Fluent UI Extensibility”. In this session, he’ll show how to extend the SharePoint 2010 Fluent Interface by coding custom page components for the ribbon that can respond to Web Part selections. SharePoint’s new client side object model can be used to let your app interact with your business users, as Wouter shows with the example of how to define custom Web Part Adders to streamline the way people insert content on a page.

If you’re faced with the challenge of setting up a SharePoint 2010 extranet, Michael Noel’s session should answer the question of how to make sure the content is isolated for security, but still lets your business users collaborate effectively. Michael points out that if you get this wrong, it can lead to security breaches and confusion. The session focuses on understanding the various extranet models for SharePoint 2010 and how to implement them, with practical advice on how to implement them. The information includes the different extranet content models and authentication options, including Claims-based authentication. Michael also shows how to use tools such as Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 to centralize identity management to SharePoint 2010 farms to get better control, automatic account provisioning, and synchronization of profile information across multiple SharePoint authentication providers.

Those of you who need to tie SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2010 together might want to sit in on Randy Williams’ session called “Reporting Nirvana”. In it, Randy is promising you’ll be amazed by the power and ease of Power View and the way it lets business users build rich, dynamic reporting applications from their web browsers. He also looks at how the new version of SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) integrates as a pure SharePoint service application, simplifying deployment and the architecture of your reporting platform.

Other sessions on offer look at managing external data using Business Connectivity Services; end-to-end security for SharePoint farms; and how to get the best out of SharePoint’s Search Services.

If the wealth of sessions on offer isn’t enough excitement, the conference is hosting its well known free social evening, the SQL-Schnapps & ShareStein evening. Attendees can enjoy free drinks and food with peers, mingle with the speakers and talk to solution providers.
