Going Further with Website Design

The books in this section build on the framework provided by HTML and CSS, and look at related aspects of Web page creation.

Creating a Web Site: The Missing Manual

Author: Matthew MacDonald
Publisher: O'Reilly,
Pages: 582
ISBN: 9781449301729
Rating: 4.5

As the title suggests, this is a book that looks at how to create a website. We've reviewed the second and third editions, and there's now a fourth updated edition. Ian Elliot gave the book a rating of 4.5 stars, and was impressed by the quality of the explanations.

Ian recommended the book with the reservation that it won't suit complete beginners or anyone not willing to delve a bit deeper into the technology.

Hello! HTML5 & CSS3

Author: Rob Crowther
Publisher: Manning
Pages: 560
ISBN: 9781935182894
Rating: 4.5
Reviewer: Mike James

Can a fun approach to technical topics ease the learning process? While unsure at first, reviewer Mike James concluded that while this doesn't look like a serious book, if you start to read it rather than just look at it, what you quickly realize is that this is not a low-level introduction. Lurking in there is some advanced material.

Mike awarded the book 4.5 stars, describing it as a good book if you want a varied approach to the topics with some light hearted cartoons thrown in. He concluded that this is not a book for the complete beginner and neither is it for the expert. Ideally you should know quite a lot about HTML and CSS and want to be informed and educated about HTML5 and CSS3.

Don't be fooled into thinking that this is a "dummy's" book because it has a lot of technical detail, some of which is introduced faster than you might imagine for a book with this sort of approach. You also need to be able to cope with quite a lot of JavaScript. As long as you are not expecting a beginner's book, we can recommend it.

Information Architecture: Blueprints for the Web

Author: Christina Wodtke & Austin Govella
Publisher: New Riders
Pages: 312
ISBN: 978-0321600806
Rating: 4.5

Mike James reviewed this book and gave it 4.5 stars, saying that while it could have been a complete waste of space in that it apparently covers the obvious in 300 pages, it's actually very good! The book covers how to design a web site including details of the interaction the user should have with any Web 2.0 application. The authors put emphasis on designing so that the user's expectations are met and hence you have a happy unconfused user.

The final conclusion is that this is a good book of its type, well written, easy to read but don't complain that it isn't advanced, technical or about implementation issues - these are websites of the mind, and aspire to perfection.
