JetBrains has released its annual analysis of the developer ecosystem, and this year's results show the ever-increasing hold of AI along with a rise in the importance of virtual reality. The main finding of the research is that the prominence of AI in software is growing, with four out of five companies embracing third-party AI tools in their development workflows and 18% of developers incorporating AI capabilities into their products. The survey found that nearly 80% of companies either allow third-party AI tools or have no formal restrictions, showing how much more comfortable industry is AI integration. New this year in the report is a the JetBrains Language Promise Index. This ranks languages on a number of measures, specifically audience growth over the past five years, the stability of this growth, the share of people expressing an intention to adopt the language, and the share of its users who want to adopt another language. JetBrains says the undisputed leaders of the index at the moment are TypeScript, Rust, and Python. One result that surprised us was the position of Lua as the fifth in the index of most popular languages. Python, which started out with a 32% share in JetBrains first survey seven years ago (nearly on par with PHP's 30%), is now used by more than half of the world’s programmers. Python dominates in AI and ML, and it continues to be popular in data-intensive fields. The index also found that a significant number of C++ developers report active involvement in AI and ML projects, highlighting its relevance in performance-critical applications. The annual update to the ranking of languages used shows that JavaScript and Python continue topping the list of languages used by the most developers, and despite its positioning in the language promise index, Lua was only used by 5 percent of developers compared to JavaScript's 61 percent. The other main thrust of the analysis looks at overall developer experience, what the emerging technologies are, and what are the most lucrative languages. The topic of developer experience (DX) is described as being on the rise, with just under half of respondents saying their companies measured developer experience and developer productivity. Virtual reality in coding is another area of growth, and while only 8% of developers have experimented with coding in VR, nearly 50% are eager to give it a try. The highest-paying programming languages reported were Scala, Go, Kotlin, and Rust, followed by C++, Shell, Java, and Python. And contrary to popular belief, desktop development is more widespread than mobile development. The full details of the report and the raw data are available on the JetBrains website.
