MDN, Mozilla's multilingual resource for web documentation, has been available to developers for an entire decade. Today, July 23, is officially its 10th birthday.

As the timeline indicates the original wiki site, then called Mozilla Developer Center, dates from 2005. In February of that year, Mitchell Baker, the Mozilla Foundations CEO, blogged that Mozilla had successfully negotiated with AOL to use the former Netscape DevEdge materials. These formed the basis of and open, free, community-built online resource for all Web developers thar launched on July 23, 2005 and has grown to become today's MDN. Its latest "look and feel" date from December 2013, as we reported at the time.

In a bog post published today Mozilla tells us:

Currently, MDN has more than 4 million users and over 1000 volunteer editors per month creating and translating documentation, sample code, tutorials and other learning resources for all open Web technologies, including CSS, HTML, JavaScript and everything that makes the open Web as rich and versatile as it is.

As the infographiic points out, the resource now consists of 34,500 documents with 13,200 pages in English and 21,200 translations in 42 locales:

Looking to the future, a Mozilla spokesperson told us:

"MDN as it exists today is quite different from its beginnings ten years ago. The Web has evolved, Mozilla has evolved, and MDN has evolved. We can expect even greater changes in the next ten years. We know for sure there will be many more web developers, many more types of devices, and many standards that are not yet written."

"Some things won’t change: Mozilla’s mission will continue to be to work towards an Internet that is a global public resource, open and accessible for all. MDN will continue to be a means towards that mission, by providing resources to enable anyone to become a creator of the Web. MDN’s content, no matter how it’s delivered, will be contributed by a global community of people who are passionate about learning and sharing knowledge about the Web."
