There has been a free Wikipedia iOS app available in the App Store for some time but you can now download an Android version from the Google market.

Wikipedia may have been in the news recently for blackouts protesting SOPA, but during it all you could still read the mobile site. Now you can do it in style using the new Android app.

There has been a Wikipedia iOS app available in the App Store for some time but you can now download an Android version from the Google market. It will also soon be available from the Amazon and other markets. The app is free, of course, and it runs on Android 2.2 and up.  You can save articles to read offline at a later time. There is a share option, which sends an article by email etc.

The application has been built using PhoneGap in HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. So this is another example of avoiding the problem of creating apps on a range of platforms by using PhoneGap to wrap a web app as a native app. There are plans to port the app to iOS, Symbian, Blackberry, WP7, WebOS and Bada. This should be easy given the method of implementation.

The WikiMedia Mobile project  is looking for help and you don't have to code in Java or iOS - JavaScript is what you need.

You can download the new app from the Android Market and the source code is available at Git Hub.
