Google has announced that Android App downloads have passed the 10 billion milestone and has produced an infographic that gives some interesting details of the when, what, and who of this explosion of apps.

The Android Market has seen exponential success. From being opened in 2008 it took over 20 months to reach 1 billion download in July 2010. It reached 3 billion nine months later (March 2011). The number of downloads then doubled in four months so that the 6 billion mark was passed in July 2011 and four more billion were then added in the space just over four months.

For developers what is more interesting is what types of apps have been popular and where most downloads are made. Google has posted this infographic on the Android Developer Blog.

To view it click on it and then use the close button at its top right corner to carry on reading.

The fact I find the most amusing is that well over $3 billion in speeding fines would have been levied if players of Android driving games had been in real cars on real roads.

For downloads per capita South Korea comes first, followed by Hong Kong and Taiwan beating the US into fourth place. Three Scandinavian countries are in the list but Europe is otherwise only represented by the Netherlands.

To celebrate passing the 10 billion mark Google is offering a selection of apps for just 10 cents each day until December 16. See the details each of  which apps are promoted each day on +Android.
