Android 3 Honeycomb SDK finalized

Google has released the full SDK for Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and apps for the new platform can now be published to the Android Market.

We reported on the highlights of the Honeycomb (Android 3.0) platform last month (see Android 3.0 Platform Preview and SDK) and now its final version is out developers can finalise their apps for the crop of tablets that are coming onto the market.

The new API level is 11 and an interactive Android API Differences Report enables you to find changes, removals and additions from the previous one allowing you to filter by package, class, constructor, method and field.

Also released with the new platform are updates to its SDK tools (r10),  which now supports the Renderscript graphics engine and compiles .rs files into Java Programming Language files and native bytecode, and to the ADT Plugin for Eclipse (10.0.0) which now has traceview integration for easier profiling plus the following improvements to its UI Builder: 

  • New Palette with categories and rendering previews.
  • More accurate rendering of how layouts will look on devices to reflect screen space actually available to applications.
  • Selection-sensitive action bars to manipulate View properties.
  • Zoom improvements (fit to view, persistent scale, keyboard access)
  • Improved support for layouts, as well as layouts with gesture overlays.
