PTVS 2.1 has just been released and now can be used for free with Visual Express. The more interesting news is that the PTVS team has become part of the Azure Machine Learning group and it PTVS2.1 already has some Machine Learning templates.

As we reported when the beta was initially released the primary focus of this release of Python Tools for Visual Studio is web development, with an emphasis on cloud development. As well as django PTVS 2.1 supports other popular frameworks such as Flask and Bottle and supplies starter templates to get you going quickly.

According to the release announcement:

Each template gives you all the scaffolding you need to create a website in Azure quickly. PTVS supports Cloud Service, Web, and Worker Roles as well. There is also a “generic” web framework template that you can use for frameworks such as Pyramid. And for Django, which is a powerful web / CMS framework, PTVS has special support for template IntelliSense and debugging.

Perhaps the most important feature of the new version is that you can use it with the free Express versions of Visual Studio. So, as noted in this video, which covers the new features in more detail, it's a great way to get a free Python  IDE for Windows.

The other news contained in Shahrokh Mortazavi's blog post is that, the PTVS team is now part of Azure Machine Learning group.

Explaining that Azure Machine Learning "lives and breathes Data Science, a particular strong point of Python and its ecosystem", Mortazavi says that the team is  adding Data Science as one of its key pillars, which means improved support for IPython, numpy and scipy, with special emphasis on machine learning.

There is already a set of Machine Leaning pack, comprising a template, and a wizard.

From the template you can select a Classifier, Clustering or Regression project and quickly customize its inputs, algorithms and visualizations, etc.

At last ISO C23 has been published, but at $250 you probably aren't going to read it. Can we really tolerate this sort of profiteering on the work of others? This is worse than academic publishing!
