Apple's Swift Student Challenge is an annual competition designed to encourage software coding among young people. This year 50 "Distinguished Winners" were invited to attend WWDC24 where, to their surprise, some got to meet Tim Cook. The Challenge gives student developers the opportunity to showcase their creativity and coding capabilities through app playgrounds, and earn real-world skills that they can take into their careers and beyond. Dezmond Blair, Elena Galluzzo, and Jawaher Shaman, three of this year’s Swift Student Challenge winners. All Challenge winners receive one year of membership in the Apple Developer Program, a complimentary voucher to take an App Development with Swift certification exam, and a special gift from Apple. New for the 2024 Challenge, out of 350 winners, Apple is recognizing 50 Distinguished Winners for their outstanding submissions. Those winners were invited to Apple in Cupertino for "an extraordinary experience" including tailored programming and the special event held at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Fourteen of the winning students were selected to present their winning apps to Susan Prescott, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. Once they'd set up their demos, Prescott handed over to Apple CEO Tim Cook who was the surprise audience for their demos. One of the distinguished winners, 13-year-old Shaurya Gupta, shared a selfie with Cook on X, captioning it as “Mission Completed #WWDC”. Among the winning apps presented to Cook were a mountain biking virtual reality app that Cook said needs to be on Apple Vision Pro; an app demonstrating how easily a password can be cracked was created to encourage people to use strong, unique passwords; and an app for carers for the elderly provides a tool for managing meds and tasks. Apple says this year's winners come from all over the globe, representing more than 35 countries and regions. Many of their app playgrounds were sparked by something personal, such as helping people in their community or a favorite hobby.
