Google is running a Gemini API Developer Competition with prizes including a 1981 custom electric DeLorean. Entrants will use the Gemini API to tackle real-world challenges, and the organizers suggest ideas such as AI-driven disaster response systems that analyze data in real-time or educational games that adapt to the user.
The Gemini API in Google AI Studio lets developers prototype and build with Google's Gemini models, giving access to features such as tuning, system instructions, and JSON mode. The tool includes a prompt gallery and code examples in a Gemini API cookbook. The Gemini models have been created by Google DeepMind, and are built from the ground up to be multimodal, so users can work seamlessly across text, images, code, and audio to develop a range of applications. While the main aim of the competition is to create an app, Google will consider entrants that are apps, products, or prototypes integrating the Gemini API. Submissions in other formats like Python or Node.js are also welcome, according to the competition website. Apart from the top prize in the competition of the electric DeLorean, there are a number of other prizes across specific areas including innovation awards for impact with a top prize of $300,000, and for usefulness and creativity with top prizes of $200,000 each. Google will also award prizes for top apps across platforms and tools (Android, ARCore, Chrome, Firebase, and Flutter) with technology awards, and a People's Choice Award voted by the developer community. The full list of prizes (including a $1 million prize pool) and categories, can be seen on the competition website. The competition is open now, and entries must be submitted by August 12 2024. Voting will then take place until mid September, and the winners will be announced in October.
