Google Bard will from now on be known as Gemini, and Google is launching a paid subscription tier that will be based on yet another new AI model from Google. The move to a paid subscription follows the news that Microsoft is introducing a paid-for Pro version for Copilot. Until now, Gemini was the name of Google's multimodal large language model developed by Google DeepMind, and a successor to Google's LaMDA and PaLM 2. Bard is Google's conversational chatbot that uses artificial intelligence, and Google announced in December that Bard now uses a fine-tuned version of Gemini Pro to help Bard be far more capable at things like understanding, reasoning and planning. The subscription tier, Gemini Advanced, will use a new AI model from Google, Ultra 1.0. Google says that by using the Ultra 1.0 model, Gemini Advanced is far more capable at highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions and creative collaboration. Google also said that Gemini Advanced will continue to expand with new and exclusive features in the coming months, including expanded multi-modal capabilities and even better coding features, as well as the ability to upload and more deeply analyse files, documents and data. Gemini Advanced is a paid plan available in over 150 countries and territories, and while it is available and optimised only for English, it can respond to queries in other languages that Gemini is available in. The advanced tier has a free 2-month trial, after which it will cost $20 per month thereafter, including 2TB of storage and other Google One Premium benefits. Google also announced the forthcoming launch of a Gemini app for Android and iOS that is integrated with Google apps like Gmail, Maps and YouTube. The Gemini app is currently available on "selected devices in English in the US", and will be made available in Japanese, Korean, and English globally except for the UK, Switzerland, European Economic Area countries and associated territories.
