The finalists of the Google Play Indie Games Contest in Europe have been announced. The competition is open to indie game developers from more than 30 countries. The Indie Games Contest runs in several versions throughout the year, with earlier competitions in South Korea and the USA. To be eligible, developers had to have published a new game on Google Play after 1 January 2017, or be planning on publishing a new game within 2017 and by submitting a private beta to the competition organizers. The European round of the competition is now entering the final round.
All the 20 finalists are getting a free trip to London to showcase their game at the final, as well as inclusion of their game on a promotional billboard in London for 1 month. The games will also be included in a dedicated Indie Games Contest collection on the Indie Corner for one month in more than 40 countries across EMEA. Games in the final 20 include a strategy game that combines exploration and development; a cross between a classic Portal and Bridge Constructor game; a Text Messaging Adventure game about a Syrian migrant trying to find her way to Europe; a colour and perception puzzle where players Reorder mosaics of coloured tiles into perfectly ordered spectrums; and a galactic traveler game where players go on an exploratory mission to discover planets, use a jetpack, and fly a spaceship. Google's Adriana Puchianu said: "Selecting just 20 finalists has once again been a huge challenge. We had a lot of fun playing the games that will go on to showcase at the Saatchi Gallery on February 13th in London." The final on 13 February 2018 will see the 20 finalists narrowed down to the top 10. The 20 finalists will showcase their games to the audience at the event, and the final 10 will then pitch in front of the jury of industry experts for a chance to win the top prizes. This video from last year's event shows how this works:
The showcase is a free public event open for anyone who wants to try out the games, meet the developers who created them, and vote for their favourites. If you want to attend fill out the registration form as priority will be given to pre-registered participants. As all the games are now on Google Play you can try them out for yourself via the Google Indie Games Contest Page.
