Google AMP Joins OpenJS Foundation

Google has announced its AMP framework will join the OpenJS Foundation. AMP has been open source for the last four years, but the move will make it less Google-centric.

AMP is a web component framework that you can use to create user-first websites, stories, emails, and ads. AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages, and the idea is you can use AMP to create pages that load faster on mobile devices, preventing users leaving your page because it doesn't load fast enough. A more pragmatic description of AMP is that it's a restricted set of HTML and JavaScript features that can be used in a conforming web page. The idea is that the page will be faster if it makes use of a limited range of features which can be preloaded and ready to go. The AMP team says that since its inception in early 2016, over 25 million domains have published more than 1.5 billion AMP pages.

To build AMP pages, you create another version of your site that follows the AMP project’s standards. Once you do that, your AMP site will have its own URL (site.com/page/amp) and be compatible with most popular web browsers like Chrome, FireFox, and Safari.

The OpenJS Foundation was created by merging the Node.js Foundation and the JS Foundation, and has a mission to support the healthy growth of JavaScript and web technologies by providing a neutral organization to host and sustain projects, as well as collaboratively fund activities that benefit the ecosystem as a whole.

Google says that this goal fits well with AMP's mission to provide a user-first format for web content. Google also likes the fact that the OpenJS Foundation is happy for projects to maintain their identities.

Malte Ubl of AMP’s Technical Steering Committee said:

"Google will continue to be a strong supporter of AMP.  Google is already a platinum member of the OpenJS Foundation, and will continue to provide additional financial and other forms of support to the foundation to ensure a thriving AMP community and ecosystem.  The team of Google employees contributing full time to the AMP open source project will also continue to do so".
