Being able to study online opens the opportunity to gaining a university degree to lots of people who wouldn't have considered it an option. It makes it possible to continue with work or family commitments and brings higher education to every part of the world. It is also a more affordable route to gaining a degree so that the answer to the question Is Your Degree Worth Its Cost? is far almost certainly going to be "yes".

The Univerity of London Bachelor of Science in Computer Science admitted its first cohort of online students in April 2019.  In this video Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of Coursera, explains how the new online BSc will open up the subject to a new generation of students previously “shut out” from this area of learning and also help satisfy the demand from employers for qualified computer scientists:

Another advantage of the University of London BSc in Computer Science is that if you don't have formal qualifications you can choose "performance-based admission" where work experience is taken into account and you have up to three years to complete the two modules required for admission to the full program

The schedule too is flexible and you can take between 3 and 6 years to complete modules worth 360 credits (as a rule of thumb allow 10 hours per credit). Courses are at three levels. The first level covers computer programming, with a special project on web applications. You will learn how computers work as well as the mathematics that underpin computer science. The second level deepens your programming skills and your understanding of how to develop substantial software projects. In the third level, you’ll have the opportunity to study specialized modules depending on your specialist pathway and bring your knowledge and skills together with a final individual project — developing your own software.

In total students will complete 22 taught modules and a final project to gain their BSc in Computer Science.

  • 8 compulsory modules at level 4 (introductory), covering the fundamentals: how computers work, how to program, and mathematics that underpin computer science.
  • 8 compulsory modules at level 5 (intermediate), covering programming skills needed for software projects and specialist topics
  • 6 elective modules at level 6 (advanced) which enable you to specialize in:
    •  Machine Learning and AI,
    • Data Science,
    • Web and Mobile Development,
    • Physical Computing and the Internet of Things,
    • Games Development
    • Virtual Reality
    • User Experience.
  • A Final project. (30 credits) that combines your knowledge and skills to create a software system.

Modules are assessed by a mix of coursework and examination, with exam centres in locations in many countries.

A Master's Degree is another way for those already in a programming career, to gain an academic credential and there are upcoming deadlines for programs we've previously covered, see Online Master Of Computer Science Degrees From Coursera. In particular you need to enrol by October 15 for the Spring 2020 Master of Computer Science and Master of Computer Science in Data Science from the University of Illinios, starting in January.

The University of Pennsylvania Online Master of Computer and Information Technology, which has  no computer science prerequisites so enabling people with diverse academic backgrounds to switch to a CS-related career, is  also currently accepting applications for the next cohort, starting on January 15th, 2020. See Ivy League Online Master's In Computer Science on Coursera for more details.
