Four web specializations at different levels and covering different aspects are starting on Coursera. If you want to earn a certificate you can save 10% by pre-paying for the bundle of courses. If you don't want the certificate, and don't want to complete a final project that demonstrates what you've learned, you can audit the courses for free. Web Design For Everybody is a series of courses for beginners that cover the basics of web development and coding. Created by the University of Michigan, this specialization covers how to write syntactically correct HTML5 and CSS3, and how to create interactive web experiences with JavaScript. The four courses, which need to be studied one after the other, are:
Coursera specializations culminate in a Capstone project which requires students to put together the skills they have acquired through the series of courses. You are only eligible for the Capstone once you have completed them all. In the case of the Web Design for Everybody Capstone, students will demonstrate the ability to design and implement a responsive site for a minimum of three platforms, and develop a professional-quality web portfolio. Also at beginner level, and therefore covering much of the same ground but going rather further to include MongoDB, is a specialization that covers the basics of modern full stack web development, from UX design, to front-end coding, to custom databases. Responsive Website Development and Design Specialization comes from the University of London. It consists of five 4-week courses:
For the culminating Capstone, students are asked to create a complete, responsive, multi-user, data-driven website which aims to solve a problem they are interested in! For students who already have familiarity with programming the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in partnership with IBM Academic Initiative, has developed an intermediate level Full Stack Web and Multiplatform Mobile App Development Specialization. It too has 5 courses, each 3 or 4 weeks in length, but they are quicker paced and cover more technologies:
Its Capstone project is aimed at building a fully functional front-end Application (both Web App designed using Bootstrap+AngularJS, and hybrid mobile app implemented using the Ionic framework) and full server-side implementation using Node.js+Express+MongoDB (possibly using a higher level framework).
Seach Engine Optimization (SEO) is a 5-course specialization aimed at website owners and those who want a career in this area. At beginner level, it comes from University of California, Davis and is being presented for the first time, with its first course starting today, February 9th. It sets out to will teach students to optimize website content for the best possible search engine ranking, covering the theory behind Google search and other search engine algorithms.
The set of courses is:
For the Capstone, Website Optimization Client Report, students will identify a medium size website of your choosing (25 – 100) pages, conduct a full website audit and create an SEO report with specific recommendations for the website to increase its organic search engine optimization.
