The 2022 Season of Docs has been announced. The project, which is supported by Google, aims to bring open source organizations and technical writers together. Participating projects receive funds to create, improve, or expand their documentation, while Google benefits by increased knowledge of effective metrics for evaluating open source documentation. By pairing up technical writers and open source projects, Google hopes to improve the quality of open source documentation. From the other side, the aim is to give technical writers an opportunity to gain experience in contributing to open source projects and to learn about open source code. The project team says that organizations wanting to take part in Season of Docs should take the time to complete the steps in the exploration phase before the application process begins. The suggested steps start with the creation of a project page to gauge community and technical writer interest in participating, and publicizing the fact you're thinking of participating on your project channels and by adding your project to the list of interested projects on GitHub. It's also recommended that you find potential mentors to help technical writers get started. Organizations accepted onto the project will receive between US$5,000 and US$15,000 to use for a documentation project. They will get two payments; 40% when they hire a technical writer, and 60% after receiving the final evaluation and case study. Organizations will have up to six months to complete their documentation project and will be expected to fill out monthly status reports followed by a final report and case study at the end og the process. Part of the remit is that the organization sets out markers by which the success of the project can be evaluated. All the details, including when and how grants with be paid is on the Season of Docs website.
