Google has added a new tool to Gemini. Canvas is a new interactive space within Gemini that can be used to create and refine documents or code. Gemini (which used to be called Bard) is Google's conversational chatbot that is based on Google's multimodal large language model (LLM), also called Gemini.
Google describes Canvas is an interactive space for rapid iteration, whether you're writing documents or coding. Looked at from a coding perspective, Canvas shows a combination of the code and a live preview of the results. You can edit the code and see real-time changes based on your edits, with Canvas acting as a combination of code editor, browser-based output and AI assistant. The AI assistant aspect provides idea generation, research, and content development, with the ability to make targeted edits, adjust tone, length, and formatting through natural language commands. Canvas also lets you highlight a section of code and ask Gemini to explain it, to improve its performance, or find and fix a problem. Going one stage earlier, Google says you can describe what you want the code to do, and Canvas will generate relevant code snippets for various programming languages. You can also share your working previews or export Python code to Google Colab. The code generation works for HTML/React code.
Canvas also comes with an experimental test console for developers, built with the Gemini API, called Multimodal Canvas, where you can test multimodal prompts using drawing, camera, and images. Google says Canvas eliminates the need to switch between multiple applications, providing a streamlined environment for creative and technical projects. It also has an option to export to Google Docs for further collaboration. While there is some mobile support, so you can access your Canvas projects in your mobile app, you can only edit text style and format in the Gemini web app on desktop. This functionality is not available on mobile devices. Canvas is available globally across all Gemini-supported languages.
