Anaconda has announced that it is joining the AI Alliance. Anaconda is best known as a provider of open-source distributions of Python and R for scientific computing.

The AI Alliance was launched in December 2023 by a group of organizations across industry, startup, academia, research and government with a common aim of supporting open innovation and open science in AI. The founder members of the alliance included AMD, CERN, Dell, IBM, Intel, Linux Foundation, Meta, Oracle, Red Hat and Sony alongside many specialist AI companies and universities.  The alliance is dedicated to promoting open, safe, and responsible AI.

The AI Alliance has set up member-driven working groups across all major AI topical areas liste. It has also established a governing board and technical oversight committee dedicated to advancing AI-based project areas, as well as establishing overall project standards and guidelines.

The Alliance also plans to partner with important existing initiatives from governments, non-profit and civil society organizations who are working in the AI space.

Anaconda is to join two of the working groups set up by the alliance, focused on AI Safety and Trust Tooling and AI Policy Advocacy. Anaconda plans to actively participate in both groups.

Alongside the news of joining the alliance, a partnership has been announced between IBM and Anaconda to embed Anaconda's open source Python packages into IBM watsonx.

The partnership means IBM watsonx users will have access to Anaconda's base open source software (OSS) repository and have the option to upgrade to Anaconda's premium paid repository. The repository contains OSS Python packages and AI frameworks that watsonx users will be able use in AI applications.

Users will also be able to tune models with enterprise data while keeping data private and secure, and to make use of OSS frameworks, tools, and models from data ingestion and model selection to AI app building and deployment.
