Google has launched the Google Maps Places API for Android and iOS devs can sign up for the public beta which is coming shortly.

The Places API,  that matches GPS co-ordinates to specific locations, isn't new - it was announced at Google I/O 2011 - but until now has only been available as a web service and a JavaScript library.

Now Google's global database of more than a million places - like hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and businesses has arrived on Android and is coming to iOS.

The Places API lets you add a place picker that provides a UI dialog displaying an interactive map and a list of nearby places. Users can choose a place, and your app can then retrieve the details of the selected place, including the name, address, phone number, and website. An autocomplete feature is included to save time and frustration typing out place names.

You can also add new places relevant to your users to the Google Places database and improve the map by reporting the presence of a device at a particular place.
