With just one week to go until the developer conference that will take over the Barbican Centre in London, we try to pick some interesting sessions. With a choice of 18 all-day pre- and post-conference workshops and nine concurrent tracks for the DevWeek main conference that you can move freely between, the task of deciding what to focus on is not going to be easy.
Windows 8 sessions are bound to be popular and delegates can start with whistle-stop overview before going on to an depth sessions on WIN RT, the Modern UI, the application lifecycle for Windows 8 apps and their data binding options. If you are interested in mobile apps in general a session from Dino Esposito looks at the top features to aim for and in another session Dino looks at Phone Gap. Web development features on the agenda with sessions on ASP.NET and on HTML5 and CSS. There's plenty on JavaScript including a jQuery 101 session. For C# developers there are two deep dive sessions from Rock Solid Knowledge's Andy Clymer. one is on the new async and await keywords in C# 5.0. and into the other he goes into features such as iterator methods, extension methods and dynamic result in code generation by ther C# compiler. Andy Clymer admits to being "something of a compiler nut" and he also has a session Roslyn, Microsoft's new compiler written in managed code that allows devs to access the various part of the compiler pipeline. If you are more interested in user interfaces than what is going on under the hood, a session presented by Infragistics' Tobias Komischke entitled "How to Assess User Experience – “Errr, I don’t know… what do you think?” looks at different dimensions of UX and free tools for checking UX quality. In another talk Tobias looks at User Centred Data Visualisation. Microsoft technologies are well represented throughout the week with lots on SQL Server, Sharepoint and Azure but if you are looking for general approaches and alternative technologies there are sessions on software architecture design patterns, unit testing, agile methodology, SOLID principles, functional programming and push communication with SignalR.
In total there over 100 sessions in the main conference so this selection of topics is far from exhaustive. You can find more details in the DevWeek 2013 brochure and there is still time to book a place not only for the main conference, which runs Tuesday March 5 to Thursday March 7 but also for the pre-conference workshops on Monday March 4 and the post-conference workshops on Friday March 8.
