The sixth annual Software Architect conference takes place in London next month. The format of two full days of workshops with two busy days of conference sessions in between makes it well worth travelling to attend.

This event is for "anyone with a specific interest in software architecture" and if you are not sure what this entails then attend the opening keynote, in which Simon Brown sets out to explore what the role involves for 21st century software development teams.

There are six tracks to the conference and this provides a wide pick and mix choice with coverage of theory and practice - and topics that cover both such as design patterns emergent design and Agile techniques.

Given the timing of the conference it's no coincidence that there are sessions on Windows 8.  HTML5, NodeJS and Clojure are all topic that crop up on the first day of the conference while on the second day there are sessions on Android and iOS, jQuery and  NoSQL. There are also talks on core topics such as unit testing, web application architecture and domain specific languages; state-of-the-art insights into MVVM programming, Roslyn and complexity theory and opportunities to consider professional issues such as contracts, coaching.

Although the best value option for this event is a Universal Pass, covering all four days, it is possible to book for as little as a single day, i.e. for a Pre-conference or Post-conference full-day workshop. Again there are six choices per day - but unlike the conference where you don't have to decide ahead of time which sessions to attend, delegates need to reserve a seat at a specific workshop and the topics provide a wide range of choice for practicing or potential software architects.

Pre Conference:

  • Are you a software architect?  - Simon Brown
  • A day of design patterns - Andrew Clymer & Richard Blewett
  • Architecture with Agility - Kevlin Henney
  • Mobile development, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, PhoneGap and you - Dino Esposito
  • Continuous delivery - Neal Ford
  • Understanding Windows 8, Metro and the Windows Runtime - David Wheeler

Post Conference:

  • Agile/OO design from start to finish - Allen Holub
  • Structuring XAML-based applications using DI, M-V-VM and Prism -  David Wheeler
  • Effective architecture sketches  - Simon Brown
  • Designing and building ASP.NET MVC applications -  Kevin Jones
  • Pattern-oriented software architecture - Kevlin Henney
  • A programmatic introduction to the Neo4j graph database - Jim Webber & Ian Robinson

The conference takes place at the America Square Conference Centre which combines modern high tech facilities with a genuine bit of history, as the original London Wall runs right through the venue.

Delegates can expect plenty of opportunity for networking with each other and with the speakers. In addition to lunch, coffee and tea breaks there's a drinks reception on Wednesday evening.

Book before September 21st for an Early Bird discount of up to £100.
