Packt has launched its annual Skill Up survey for 2018 to gain insight into the state of the IT industry from a developer’s perspective. The incentive to participate is 80% discount on offer from Packt store.

The survey, which is now in its fourth year, has been completed by over 30,000 developers who respond to questions about their skills, salaries, and industry trends.The survey focuses on working in the IT, development and software industries.

The publishing company created the survey to find out what developers were interested in learning about, and use the results to work out which areas are key for developers. Packt collects and publishes the information to help developers make the right learning choices for their career.

The Skill Up survey takes around 5 - 10 minutes to complete, and those completing it receive a discount code for 80% off an order from the Packt store. All responses are anonymous, and Packt plans to release the results of this year's survey in June 2018. Questions are designed to find out the most valuable technical skills, where to work to earn the top salaries, and to predict future trends in IT.

Last year's survey had respondents from 43 countries, though the majority of respondents were men aged between 35 and 45 working full-time in software in the United States. The survey found that Python was the most popular programming language, with the other tools in the top five being Git, Visual Studio, Eclipse, and Java.

Developers thought Python was also a good skill to learn, though Docker beat it as the top tool to learn over the next 12 months.

In terms of earning power, from the roles available in the survey, those earning most were C-Suite Level Managers, Big Data Engineers, Mid-level Leads/Managers, Security Engineers, and Information Architects. Those working full time as Game Developers earned the lowest average salary, with Web Developers, Technical Support Professionals, and Mobile Developers all reporting low earnings. Looked at from a geographical perspective, respondents in North America earned the most, and those from South and South-East Asia the least. In terms of what languages earn most, those developers who program using Splunk, Hadoop, Kafka, Chef, or SAS reported higher than average earnings. It'll be interesting to see what this year's figures reveal.
