In response to demand expressed by its community, Arduino has initiated the Arduino Certification Program to officially certify Arduino users, and confirm their expertise in key areas.

Arduino has previously declared its mission to make technology accessible to everyone, and into the hands of every student and educator. and to this end had established Arduino Education. Its team of  education experts, content developers, engineers and interaction designer is focused on developing the next generation of STEAM systems- integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math - and supporting the needs of educators and students throughout the educational journey.

Its education programs are supported by a range of kits. The first of these was the Arduino Science Kit Physics Lab, designed for scientific exploration for middle school students aged 11 to 14. It was developed in partnership with Google and is fully compatible with Google Science Journal available on Android. The latest, launched a year ago, is the Arduino Engineering Kit intended for use by university studentswho will learn fundamental engineering concepts, key aspects of mechatronics, and MATLAB and Simulink programming through using it. The kit includes an Arduino MKR1000, custom designed shields, and all the other components necessary for building three projects: a self-balancing motorcycle, a mobile rover, and a drawing robot.

The Arduino Certification Program (ACP) will offer accreditation for enthusiasts, educators and professionals — which have been identified as the largest Arduino user groups through extensive feedback from the community.

The very first exam in the program Arduino Fundamentals, which has just been made available, is for Enthusiasts, including but not restricted to middle school students. It also the lowest rung on the ladder and assesses the skills and knowledge acquired by working your way through the practical tasks in the Uno-based Arduino Starter Kit, which has instructions for 15 projects in a 170-page book which also covers the basics.

Currently the exam limited to the US, where it  costs $30 and can also be purchased as part of a new Arduino Fundamental Bundle kit - i.e the Arduino Starter Kit and an exam voucher.

The exam comprises 36 questions of varied format and difficulty which have to be answered in 75 minutes. If you want to see what it entails there's a Demo with five questions to be answered in 5 minutes:

Sadly once you've completed the demo you see your score but you don't see which questions you got wrong or the right answers - and you can't you the link to redo it!

The exam covers three main subjects: theory and introduction to Arduino, electronics, and coding and includes questions that test your knowledge in relation to the following 8 main categories:

  • Electricity
  • Reading circuits and schematics
  • Arduino IDE
  • Arduino boards
  • Frequency and duty cycle
  • Electronic components
  • Programming syntax and semantics
  • Programming logic

You will receive your results immediately after submission, indicating whether you passed or failed. By passing the exam you will be rewarded with the Arduino Fundamentals certificate.

This certificate will be a worthwhile addition to the resume of anybody wanting to prove their mastery of electronics and also confirms the role or the Arduino in education.
