Google has updated Firebase Studio with new Agent modes, foundational support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and Gemini CLI integration. Firebase Studio is still in preview. It is an agentic cloud-based development environment that can be used to build and ship production-quality full-stack AI apps, including APIs. Firebase Studio unifies Project IDX with specialized AI agents and assistance from Gemini in Firebase. Project IDX was a browser-based development experience built on Google Cloud and powered by Codey, a foundational AI model trained on code and built on PaLM 2. Project IDX was built on Code OSS, Code-Open Source Software, the core layer of VS Code. It was incorporated into Firebase Studio last year. Firebase is Google's backend service for developers creating realtime apps for iOS, Android and the web. Three modes are available for interacting with Gemini, including a new autonomous Agent mode. The new "Agent (Auto-run)" mode makes use of Gemini to autonomously reason and generate entire apps or add features to existing apps. Examples of its use include coding changes across multiple files, writing tests, fixing errors, and refactoring components. There's also an ask mode that can be used for discussion and planning with Gemini, and an Agent mode where Gemini will propose changes to your app, then you can choose to approve them if you want. The updated version also adds a preview of support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in Firebase Studio, meaning you can add MCP servers to your workspace. Google suggests developers might use the Firebase MCP server to explore data in Cloud Firestore using natural language, or use Context7 to get library specific context for Gemini. The final improvement is integration with Gemini CLI. Google recently launched Gemini CLI as a free-to-use tool for tasks including content generation and research. The Firebase Studio team says that Gemini CLI provides an AI-powered tool without the need to switch contexts for terminal tasks such as code generation, debugging, executing commands, and managing project files.
