JetBrains has launched a non-commercial license for its JavaScript and TypeScript IDE, WebStorm, and for Rider, its cross-platform .NET and game development IDE. WebStorm is a JavaScript web development IDE from JetBrains. It has smart coding assistance for JavaScript and compiled-to-JavaScript languages, Node.js, HTML and CSS, with code completion, on-the-fly error detection, and refactorings. Rider is JetBrains' cross-platform .NET IDE based on the IntelliJ platform and ReSharper. It can be used for development using the entire .NET technology stack, and for game development. Rider can be used to develop applications targeting frameworks like .NET, ASP.NET Core, MAUI, or game engines like Unity, Unreal Engine, or Godot. The new license is aimed at developers using WebStorm or Rider for non-commercial purposes, such as learning, open-source project development, content creation, or hobby development. JetBrains says the new non-commercial licenses can significantly expand the availability of both WebStorm and Rider, as over two-thirds of developers code outside of work as a hobby, and almost 40% code outside of work for educational and learning purposes. Hadi Hariri, VP of Program Management and Communications at JetBrains, said: "This change allows us to lower the barrier of access to our products for those learning software development, hobbyists, and content creators, amongst others." Anastasia Kazakova, Head of Marketing and BizDev for .NET and GameDev Tools at JetBrains, said JetBrains is adopting a similar approach to that taken by creators of game engines like Unreal Engine and Unity, who offer indie developers a way to use their technologies for free. Earlier this year, JetBrains released several new products under the same terms for non-commercial use, including RustRover, its IDE for Rust, and Aqua, JetBrains IDE explicitly designed for test automation. The company also provides Community Editions of IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm. Non-commercial users will get access to the same set of features that are available in paid subscriptions, including local AI-powered code completion introduced by JetBrains earlier this year. The non-commercial licenses for WebStorm and Rider are available now.
