Microsoft has launched SharePoint Embedded, a new API-only cloud-based file and document management system that can be used by app developers to make use of the Microsoft 365 file and document storage platform for any app. Microsoft says the platform is designed for use by both first-party Microsoft products and third-party apps created by any developer. Two of Microsoft's recent apps, Microsoft Loop and Microsoft Designer, are powered by SharePoint Embedded. The idea is that an organization can use SharePoint Embedded in their business apps, "creating a unified and familiar experience for both app users and system administrators charged with managing these new apps". SharePoint Embedded apps create and use a new SharePoint storage partition within the organization's 365 setup. This doesn't have a user interface, and documents in the partition are only accessible via APIs. SharePoint Embedded applications can create multiple "File Storage Containers" for storing content. SharePoint Embedded applications use Microsoft Graph APIs to store files and documents the File Storage Container, SharePoint Embedded introduces a new storage primitive, containers, that offers a scalable approach to managing content. Containers also enable a rich information and security architecture to meet the needs of the most demanding modern apps. SharePoint Embedded also includes a flexible security model, and is fully integrated with the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and Microsoft Purview, so administrators can use familiar tools to manage content lifecycle, security, and compliance. SharePoint Embedded apps have two components, the first responsible for performing CRUD operations against SharePoint Embedded using Microsoft Graph APIs, and the second implements the interface for users to consume and store the documents stored in SharePoint Embedded. SharePoint Embedded is available now for public preview, with general availability planned for mid-2024. It's available under pay-as-you-go consumption terms, meaning you pay for the storage you use and the volume of API calls and data transfers, without the need for additional user licenses.
