Microsoft Silverlight Blog Abandons Silverlight

It has been three months since there was a post on the Microsoft Silverlight blog - until today. However, if you were expecting a post about Silverlight think again. The blog is all about Metro style apps - not a word of Silverlight. It's as if a blog about dogs suddenly started writing about cats.

The abandoning of Silverlight seems to have reached a new level.

Before you point out that a blog often ranges over many topics, keep in mind that this is the Silverlight blog and it has been quiet for some time. Even if much of Microsoft has no warm feelings left for Silverlight, you might expect the Silverlight team to still keep it in their affections.

But no.

When it finally broke its long silence, it was only to sing the praises of Metro.

The post "Metro style applications – designing for the user" has the opening paragraph:

It has been months since Windows 8 is available for developers and the need for new applications is growing in a fast pace.

and goes on:

And nothing is more exacting than a computer user in 21st century. It’s quite difficult to build the right application, moreover – it’s even more difficult to stay on top and not to be, metaphorically, stepped over by the big players.

Is this a coded message?

Silverlight has most certainly been stepped over by one particular big player.

It then goes into a fairly obvious discussion of the goal of a good UI for Metro. Not really of any great interest to a still dedicated Silverlight programmer....
