Microsoft has released SQL Server 2012 alongside the next step to a Hadoop service for Azure. After its virtual launch last month, SQL Server 2012 is now available. The new release includes SQL Server Data Tools, which gives you a single shared set of tools for SQL Server, and SQL Azure database and application development. Data analysis improvements include the inclusion of Power View, which lets you display data visualizations in web apps, and PowerPivot for data cube analysis in desktop apps.
Microsoft has also taken the next step to a Hadoop service for Azure with second preview that will have capacity for up to four times more testers following high demand for the initial preview. According to the SQL Server Team Blog, the new preview provides an elastic Hadoop service with more reliability through disaster recovery of the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) NameNode, and support for advanced analytics through Hadoop projects like Mahout. The new version also adds the ability for users working in applications such as Office, SharePoint and the BI tools within SQL Server 2012 to view and work with Hadoop-based data.
