RIM Strengthens Developer Commitment

RIM has changed the name of its app store, announced plans for a QWERTY device for developers, and guaranteed a return of $10,000 on apps for BlackBerry 10.

In news announced at last week's developer conference in Bangkok,  BlackBerry’s App World is being renamed BlackBerry World and the store is being expanded to include video and music content, according to the BlackBerry Developer blog.

RIM also used BlackBerry Jam Asia to announce plans for a QWERTY Alpha device that developers will be able to try in a couple of months. RIM’s Vice President of Developer Relations Alec Saunders said that priority for testing the new devices will be given to developers who have built more than two BlackBerry apps, especially those who have been given the “Built for BB10″ endorsement.

A final part of the push to make developers feel loved and wanted, and to have apps available for the launch of BlackBerrry 10 in January 2013, comes in the form of an extra guarantee for apps certified as ‘Built for BlackBerry 10’. If your app qualifies for this, RIM guarantees that your app will make at least US$10,000 in download sales.

When we first reported on this incentive in May, the deal was that an app had to earn $1,000 in its own right to qualify for the $10,000 guarantee. This barrier has now been removed, and for any app, submitted by the deadline of January 21st 2013, that merits the ‘Built for BB10' endorsement will be rewarded by the guaranteed amount with RIM will making up the difference where necessary. This time-limited offer is explained in the 10k Developer Commitment Rules, where you'll find the link to register for it.
