It's Really Quick to Make a Mobile App!
Saturday, 05 November 2011

Ninety percent of developers working on apps for mobile devices create a mobile app in 6 months or less with almost three quarters delivering their work within 3 months.

Three quarters of developers working on apps for mobile devices is plan to extend enterprise applications to mobile devices in the next year. This is one of the findings of Evans Data Corporation's Mobile Development Survey, Volume I, 2011 which has been released to subscribers.

Among other measures, the survey covers platform adoption, application monetization, the mobile enterprise, web runtime apps vs. native apps, mobile security, tools, SDKs and demand for specific APIs.

Although the market for mobile apps in a global one,  mobile developers overwhelmingly focus their efforts in their local regional markets. The exception to this is that  16.9% of those working in the Asia-Pacific region, including China and India, target the North American market, as do 12.5% of those in Europe/Middle East/Africa including Russia. On the other hand, only 12% of North American developers are looking outside their local region and almost three-quarters of them are targeting South America with only 1% considering APAC as their primary target.

Another interesting finding is that 90% of developers create mobile apps in 6 months or less with almost three quarters delivering their work within 3 months.

According to Evans Data:

Developers are benefiting from new paradigms that are unique to the mobile ecosystems. For the first time, developers’ work is largely iterative, and they are free to refine an idea until it can be easily implemented, and then add more advanced features over time with updates. More importantly, consumers have largely validated this model and have even reflected an affinity for the ongoing incremental improvement they are able to realize without the longer gaps between the bulkier updates to which they have been accustomed.

So its looks as though shorter development times represent a win-win situation.
