In order to raise funds needed to complete and release the next version of its important computer vision library, the team at OpenCV has announced a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library) is an open source computer vision and machine learning software library. OpenCV was built to provide a common infrastructure for computer vision applications and to accelerate the use of machine perception in the commercial products. It was launched in 1999 as an Intel Research initiative to advance CPU-intensive applications as part of a series of projects including real-time ray tracing and 3D projected displays. Being an Apache 2 licensed product, OpenCV makes it easy for businesses to utilize and modify the code. OpenCV has had successful campaigns on Kickstarter for both hardware and courseware. Now it is turning to Indiegogo and on October 24th will launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for OpenCV 5 development directly from the community. Announcing the campaign on the OpenCV blog, Phil Nelson, Director of Content and Creative at OpenCV, said: "During this campaign, we'll reach out to the entire community- individual developers, companies small and large, and creators. Together, we can do amazing things." OpenCV 5.0 was intended to be the the 20th anniversary release, and was initially scheduled for 2020. At the time the new version was first announced, the plans for the 5.x version started with plans to clean up the API and refresh it to make make the library more future-proof. The OpenCV team want the new version to make better use of the latest C++ standards and much improved C++ compiler that fully support those standards. They also want the new version to offer better efficiency on various architectures, CPUs and GPUs; Better ARM support and added RISC-V support are two of the major topics. There will also be an emphasis on deep learning. More architectures will be supported, including tools for text detection and recognition, object tracking, and color calibration. The plan is that the deep learning engine itself will be made more modular and will be further optimized. Other improvements include improved and extended 3D vision functionality; better documentation, and more support for Python. The crowdfunding campaign opens October 24th.
