The Games Development World Championship 2025 is open for entries. The GDWC competition has two new categories this year - Best Discord Game Award and Proceduralism Award, joining the existing categories of Best Indie Game, Best Studio Game, Best Hobby Game, Best Mobile Game, and Best Student Game.
GDWC is a global open competition for game developers that aims to highlight new and rising talents and teams. Since it began running, GDWC has had over 47,000 developers participate from over 150 different countries and has given out over $1,000,000 worth of prizes and giveaways making it the largest games development competition in the world. The deadline for submissions to the summer competition is May 31st 2025, and to be valid for entry, games need either to be still in development or released after May 31st 2024. There are advantages to entering, with the option of getting a free Multiplayer Dev Starter Pack that has free servers, tools and services from i3D.net and Modulate. Other entrant benefits include a free two month Houdini Indie license; four months extra on Surfshark VPN subscriptions; and free company registration and onboarding with Silva Hunt e-Residency for developers wanting to launch or expand their game studios in the EU. In this summer's competition, the first of the new categories, Discord, is open to games that use the Discord Embedded App SDK and are or will be submitted into the Discord App Directory. The GDWC team says this is a perfect category if you're looking to create a social multiplayer game. There's a $5,000 USD for the category winner, along with featured placement on one or more of Discord's discovery surfaces such as the Discord App Directory and Discord App Launcher. The second new category is the Proceduralism Award, which is being sponsored by Houdini. It is open to games that use procedural generation in game or in the game development process. This is the use of algorithms to create game content, such as levels, maps, and characters. Entrants can have used any procedural generation tools, though those who have used Houdini can compete for a bonus prize. The organizers say that as game developers, many will have faced the growing demand of building huge immersive worlds and crafting vast amounts of content. The prize winners in this category will win Houdini Core Licenses to help boost their procedural workflows.
