Apple is increasing its support for developers in two separate moves. The company has joined the Blender Development Fund as a Patron Member to support continued core development for Blender, and has also announced an expansion of its Developer Academy based in Naples, Italy. The Blender Development Fund accepts donations to support activities to provide free and open accessible services for all Blender contributors, including professionals and corporations, on the blender.org websites. . Blender is an open source 3D creation suite that can be used for all elements of 3D creation from modeling and rigging through to motion tracking and game creation. It has an API for Python scripting that you can use to customize the application and write specialized tools. Blender is cross-platform, and its interface uses OpenGL. Alongside a contribution to the Development Fund, Apple will provide engineering expertise and additional resources to the Blender HQ and development community to help support Blender artists and developers. The fund supports activities including bug fixing, code reviews, technical documentation and onboarding. It will also provide grants and subsidies to developers on generic and widely agreed development projects. Apple has also announced a significant new investment in its Apple Developer Academy in Naples, aiming to increase the number of coders, creators, and entrepreneurs across Europe. The academy is run by Apple with the University of Naples Federico II, and Apple is expanding academy programming through 2025, and launching a new alumni resource program that will allow students to have more opportunities to build and develop their business ventures. Since the opening of the Naples Developer Academy in 2016, nearly 2,000 students have gone through the program, which provides tools and training to find and create jobs in the iOS app economy. The Apple Developer Academy curriculum covers coding, design, marketing, and professional skills. Another 3,000 students have gone through introductory 30-day foundations courses offered in partnership with several universities and nonprofits across the country.
