More for Facebook Devs

Facebook has extended the options you have available when writing apps with the ability to share data directly from your Facebook apps.

The new facilities mean you can share photos, video and location information from your app, and your users can also tag people directly from the app. Alex Wyler on the Facebook Developer blog gave the example that “an app used to share your favorite meals can now make it possible to add where you ate and who you were with.”

The functionality makes use of the Open Graph objects and actions, and stream publish stories, and the APIs are available with their documentation. Links for the objects and actions are included in the blog post, Building Better Stories with Location and Friends.

The blog post says

“We have added familiar controls for managing tags. New users select the audience they would like to share their app activity with in the app permissions dialog. Users can choose to feature, hide or route these stories for tag review.”

You will also be able to make use of user generated photos and inline video playback, and display them in news feed and timeline from your apps.

The new features increase the gulf between Facebook and Google+ for developers; as yet, Google+ remains an almost developer-free zone with no facilities for creating apps.
