Web Design Course From Code School
Thursday, 21 May 2015

Code School has added a course on website design to its growing list of "learning by doing courses". It also has a time-limited offer for those who want to try the wider range of courses from its parent company, Pluralsight.

Fundamentals of Design, which is part of Code School's HTML/CSS Path, sets out to help developers:

improve the visual competency of any website or application build by keeping design in mind.

It has three levels:

  • Level 1 - Typography
Learn to recognize beautiful and functional type.
  • Level 2 - Colors
Review color theory and application principles.

  • Level 3 - Layout
Familiarize yourself with visual hierarchy and balance.

Like all Code School courses, its interactive content runs in the browser and there is a strong element of gamification whereby learners earn points and badges.

Level 1, which has three videos and 17 challenges is free and if you get hooked and want to continue access to all Code School courses costs $29 per month or $290 per year.

As we reported at the time, in January Code School was acquired by Pluralsight, a move that gives its users an onward path they can follow to go deeper into technologies they have started to learn or into new ones that Code School doesn't cover. From now until the end of May those enrolled in Code School who are not already subscribed to Pluralsight can get a month of  access to Pluralsight's library of over 4,000 courses for just $9.95 instead of its usual monthly subscription of $29. This offer appears to be open to those signed up to Code School irrespective of whether they have ever accessed paid content.

Code School users who have already completed Fundamentals of Design have given it good reviews - both for beginners and mid-level web designers/developers. And with the Pluralsight offer available there's likely to be more advanced training that you'll find of interest as well.
