Code.org, in collaboration with Amazon has announced the launch of a new curriculum to teach AI coding that teaches students how AI works, how to create with it, and the societal considerations and ethical implications of an AI-driven world. It is targeted at students in grades 8 to 12, aged thirteen to eighteen. Generative AI is bringing about fundamental changes in the world of work - so it makes a lot of sense to teach teenagers about it before they join the work force. Amazon has been active in developing educational materials with Code.org for over a decade and has developed AI courses for its own workforce. This new course, titled Exploring Generative AI has been devised to Empower students with hands-on projects and ethical insights into generative AI, equipping them to think critically and innovate, in an AI-driven world. It comprises two units, How AI Works and How to Use Generative AI in which students participate in hands-on activities that introduce generative AI through student-centered activities and class discussions, together with a 5-part video series that demystifies generative AI for a broad audience in 3-minute chunks. Here's the first video:
Students learn to customize language models using the new AI Chat lab which provides students with the tools to select language models, apply system prompts, and curate retrieval information to customize their chatbot. Students also create chatbots to solve a variety of problems, and interrogate the validity of responses and appropriate use of chatbots in society. Launching the course, Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of AI and Data at Amazon Web Services, said: "As AI technologies continue to reshape the workforce, ensuring students are prepared for the careers of the future is crucial. Amazon's partnership with Code.org to develop this innovative curriculum empowers the next generation with the skills they need to thrive in an AI-driven world."
