Google now offers a free 2-hour course introducing Google AI Studio and the Gemini API on Udacity. In addition, until early August, enrolling on a Google Professional Certificate on Coursera gives free access to the Google AI Essentials Course.
Google is going all out on Generative AI and wants us all to benefit. To help us experiment with large language models, Google AI Studio is a browser-based tool that lets users quickly prototype prompts for Gemini, allowing developers to quickly try out various generative models without needing to write complex code. As well as being useful for prototyping and exploring different creative possibilities it integrates with the Gemini API, enabling developers to seamlessly use the model's capabilities within their code, thus simplifying the process of building generative AI applications.

Gemini API by Google is a two-hour course now available for free on Udacity that has been created in collaboration with Machine Learning @ Berkeley the pre-requisite for which is Intermediate Python. Participants who complete it will be able to:
Describe the fundamental concepts behind LLMs and Gemini models
Differentiate between common prompting techniques, such as zero-shot, few-shot, and chain-of-thought prompting
Efficiently use Google AI Studio for designing prompts
Utilize the Gemini API effectively, including core components such as making calls, configuring parameters, sending prompts, and receiving results
Construct an application using the Gemini API
It comprises four lessons:
Introduction to LLMs and Gemini Get started with a conceptual overview of Large Language Models (LLMs) and what they can do, and learn the basics of the Google Gemini.
Introduction to Prompting in Google AI Studio Dive into practical prompt engineering skills and test out your prompts with Gemini models in Google AI Studio.
Developing with the Gemini API Learn how to use the Gemini API to interact with Gemini models using Python code
Advanced Applications Build an end-to-end Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) workflow for document search using the Gemini API
This free course does sound like two hours well spent, gaining skills that employers are already looking for.
Recognizing that demand for AI skills is growing exponentially, Coursera has added GenAI content to its Professional Certificates. Google has gone a step further and is offering the Google AI Essentials for free to those subscribing to a Google Professional Certificate.
Use generative AI tools to help develop ideas and content, make more informed decisions, and speed up daily work tasks
Write clear and specific prompts to get the output you want - you’ll apply prompting techniques to help summarize, create tag lines, and more
Use AI responsibly by identifying AI’s potential biases and avoiding harm
Develop strategies to stay up-to-date in the emerging landscape of AI
It has five modules:
Introduction to AI (1 hour) Discover how AI works and explore foundational AI concepts, such as machine learning (ML). Learn about the rise of generative AI and how to perform tasks with it. By the end of this module, you’ll have an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of AI tools and how to integrate generative AI in the workplace.
Maximize Productivity With AI Tools (2 hours) Examine the important role humans play in the effective use of AI, and understand the types of workplace tasks you can augment with AI. By the end of this module, you will be able to determine if AI is right for a given task and how to use AI to accelerate workflows.
Discover the Art of Prompt Engineering (2 hours) Write effective prompts to get the output you want. Learn how to incorporate prompting techniques, such as few-shot prompting, into your work. Understand how generative AI tools produce output and the importance of evaluating output before using it. By the end of this module, you will be able to write clear and specific prompts and produce outputs that help accomplish workplace tasks.
Use AI responsibly (2 hours) Mitigate unfair biases and inaccuracies. Learn how to apply a framework of AI harms to sample workplace scenarios and recognize the security risks of using AI in the workplace. By the end of this module, you will gain an understanding of how to use AI responsibly and effectively, and a checklist to help you do it.
Stay Ahead of the AI Curve (2 hours) Continue developing your skills within the current and emerging AI landscape. Learn about the ways organizations have leveraged AI and consider how these innovations may inspire your own AI-powered workplace solutions. By the end of this module, you will develop a strategy to stay up-to-date with future AI developments.
Successful completion of this course earns a certificate that you can share on social media and add to your resume or CV and Linked In profile.
