Pluralsight's new Technology Index ranks the popularity of more than 300 software development languages, tools and frameworks. Its initial insights include the dominance of JavaScript and the popularity of Android developer tools.

We regularly report on the popularity of languages and technologies and now there's a new kid on the block - meet the bubbly Pluralsight Technology Index:

The Pluralsight Technology Index draws from nearly 8 billion data points across five sources - Github, Stack Overflow, Google AdWords, YouTube and Google Search - and as you might imagine the size of the bubbles reflect the relative popularity of the technology. There are upwards of ten sizes of bubble which are grouped using eight possible colours for Compound Monthly Growth Rate - although in the above chart Red, for a growth rate of more than 20% isn't used.

There no surprise regarding the biggest bubble - it's Java. The next size of bubble is for technologies ranked 2 to 11 and their names are  shown on the bubbles. This raised the question where's Python. As shown in the top 20 list its currently top of the next size of bubble.

  1. Java
  2. HTML
  3. C++
  4. JavaScript
  5. Blockchain
  6. jQuery
  7. C
  8. CSS

Pluralsight is a training company. So why is it providing us with a new trends tool? That's easy to explain - the rankings shed light on the which technologies and corresponding skill sets are in-demand and growing allowing those with training budgets to make informed decisions regarding skills training.

As Nate Walkingshaw, chief experience officer at Pluralsight puts it:

"Business leaders can only drive innovation in their companies if they have a pulse on the most powerful and upcoming languages, tools and frameworks and if they have the right skills on their teams to use them, The Pluralsight Technology Index serves as a comprehensive source for evaluating which technologies and skills CIOs need to invest in."

The index will be updated monthly, and an expert analysis of the rankings will be published on a quarterly basis. The first of these focuses on two issues the dominance of JavaScript and the rapid rise of blockchain explaining that they are two of the most challenging technologies to keep pace with today.
