In three minutes this nostalgic video will whisk you though the history of video games from Pong to today's 3D realistic epics. Could this be what it would be like for a gamer's life to flash past just before the ultimate game over? Enjoy the ride:
The problem with any linear history is that it has no choice but to represent things as a progression. In this case we move from graphic's primitive era to full hi-res 3D. In reality it's more a branching tree with 2D games still making an impression on users of handheld consoles and phones. This is probably the reason Tetris is missed out - the last really big 2D game before 3D took over, apart of course from Angry Birds. It also misses out on the other aspects of the hardware - keyboard, joystick, gamepad, Kinect and so on - and it doesn't capture the change in organization and approach. We started with small companies and individual programmers creating 2D games, then 3D games became more like Hollywood productions, but we still have the small independents doing new things.
It is amazing how much nostalgia is tied up in video games - they define the look, sound and feel of the personal history of a generation.
