Azure Data Box Improves Offline Data Migration |

Microsoft has updated Azure Data Box with improvements designed to accelerate offline data migration. Azure Data Box is an offline data transfer service that can be used to send large amounts of data - in the petabytes range - into Azure Storage in what Microsoft says is a quick, inexpensive, and reliable manner. The secure data transfer makes use of hardware transfer devices that can then be used for offline data ingestion to Azure, using common copy tools such as Robocopy. All data is AES-encrypted, and the devices are wiped clean after upload. Microsoft has now announced the general availability of an Azure Data Box Disk SKU for self-encrypted drives that enables fast transfers on Linux systems. The self-encrypting drives (SEDs) use dedicated or specialized hardware for data encryption, without any software dependency from the host machine. They manage the data encryption without any software dependencies on the host machine. Microsoft says the addition means Azure Data Box offers comparable data transfer rates on Linux as that of Microsoft's BitLocker-encrypted Data Box Disk drives on Windows. The update also adds support for data ingestion to multiple blob access tiers, including cold tiers in a single order. Until now, Data Box only supported transferring data to the default access tiers of Azure Storage Accounts. This improves Data Box's customer's ability to selecting access tiers based on how frequently the data will be accessed. A preview version of cross-region data transfers has also been added, and there's new support in Azure Storage Mover for online catch-up data copy of any changes active workloads may have generated post offline migrations with Azure Data Box. Azure Storage Mover is a relatively new migration service. It is a fully managed, hybrid migration service that can be used to migrate files and folders to Azure Storage while minimizing downtime for your workload. The integration with Data Box means users can transfer only the changed data to Azure using Storage Mover's merge and mirror copy mode.
