Fei-Fie Li and Jia Li will co-lead Google AI China

Google the search engine has been blocked in China for over 7 years but Google the company maintains a presence there, with offices in Taiwan and Hong Kong and Shanghai.

The Google Developer Days in Shanghai yesterday was where Fei-Fei Li announced the Google AI China Center, as Google's first such center in Asia which joins Google's other the AI research groups in New York, Toronto, London and Zurich.

In her blog post about the new facility she writes:

“I believe AI and its benefits have no borders. Whether a breakthrough occurs in Silicon Valley, Beijing or anywhere else, it has the potential to make everyone’s life better. As an AI first company, this is an important part of our collective mission. And we want to work with the best AI talent, wherever that talent is, to achieve it.”

...

Humanity is going through a huge transformation thanks to the phenomenal growth of computing and digitization. In just a few years, automatic image classification in photo apps has become a standard feature. And we’re seeing rapid adoption of natural language as an interface with voice assistants like Google Home. At Cloud, we see our enterprise partners using AI to transform their businesses in fascinating ways at an astounding pace. As technology starts to shape human life in more profound ways, we will need to work together to ensure that the AI of tomorrow benefits all of us.

Formerly the director of Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Lab, Fei-Fei Li joined Google a year ago Jia Li, who had been head of research at Snap (formerly know as Snapchat), joined at the same time and the two women shared  top billing in the Google Cloud Machine Learning Group, Fei-Fei Li as Chief Scientist and Jia Li as Head of Research. They will now co-lead Google AI China. As well as publishing its own work, the lab will also support the AI research community by funding and sponsoring AI conferences and workshops, and working closely with the Chinese AI research community, which Fei-Fei Li described as "vibrant".

While Google has already recruited some team members there are vacancies to be filled which are listed on Google Careers. Filter by Beijing, China and search for Machine Learning.
