For Web developers the Silverlight plug-in is the hot topic of the moment and if you haven’t encountered it already this attractively produced book is a good place to start. Adam Nathan is the founding developer of Popfly, Microsoft’s first product built with Silverlight so he is a good position to introduce its core concepts and techniques for working with it. The book presents a lot of code snippets all of which are colour-coded in the same way as in Visual Studio which makes them easy to follow. The layout is also embellished with boxouts with Tips, Warnings and with Digging Deeper sections that expand on key points and are the most technical parts of this slim volume. The fact that it is a slim volume tends to conflict with the “Unleashed” tag in the title and some readers may feel that the book doesn’t go into sufficient detail about XAML and Javascript. On the other hand version 1.0 of Silverlight is itself a limited technology and this book constitutes an authoritative and practical guide for those who can’t wait to get started with it.
